Gapminder Screencast and Analysis
1.
a. As life expectancy increases, GDP per capita increases
As the % of girls competing primary school increases, children per woman decreases
b. Life expectancy means better health, which is crucial to economic development. GDP per capita shows the wealth of the country. % of girls completing primary school shows the level of education a place has. More education usually relates to more development. The less children per woman, the higher the country is in the demographic transition, therefore, more economically developed.
2.
a. life expectancy/GDP - going back to the 1800's, the top countries were almost identical as they are today. These countries include Europe, the U.S., and East Asia. The African countries were and are at the bottom of the graph. In addition, some of the Middle Eastern countries are at the top of the graph today because of oil/gas exports.
school/children per woman - The pattern of this is much alike that of the first one. The core countries have a higher primary school completion rate and less children per woman than the periphery does. As the countries develop, the will have less children per woman and a higher primary school completion rate.
b. life expectancy/GDP - The countries with low life expectancy/low GDP are that way because they don't have the education, health, or technology that the core countries have. These factors all correlate to economic development. Their jobs mostly consist of primary type jobs.
school/children per woman - These factors go hand-in-hand with the life expectancy factor because they both rely on each other. As technology diffuses to LDC's, more women can attend school and in turn, have less children.

Crossing the Line GIS Activity

1. The first country which is the one that is going to be divided is Somalia/Somaliland (Yellow). This region is located on the Eastern coast of Africa. The Second countries that are going to be combined (Arabian gulf union, Green) are Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Yemen, Oman, UAE, Bahrain and Qatar. These countries make up a large part of the region known as the Middle East.
2. Somalia/Somaliland - I believe that Somaliland will separate from Somalia due to Somalia's poor government. Somalia is in terrible shape, it doesn't even have control of the capital city, extreme poverty, and a lot of piracy going on in that area. Somaliland on the other hand is a relatively well-governed state with almost no partake in pirating. There would be no reason for the developing region of Somaliland to want to be apart of the poverty stricken Somalia.
Arabian Gulf Union - All the countries in this region have a high percentage of Muslims, making them culturally similar. Also, their are many oil/gas rigs in this area (purple dots). If these countries were to combine, they could create a booming economy with oil and gas exports and many jobs would be created. The more poverty stricken areas like Yemen could greatly benefit from combining, as it could help them get out of poverty.
3. Somalia/Somaliland - The boundaries separating these two states could be considered cultural. The people of Somaliland have a strong relation among each other culturally, and wanted to separate from Somalia as soon as their government collapsed.
Arabian Gulf Union - The boundary connecting these states is a cultural boundary. Every state in this region has a very high percentage of Muslims living there.
4. Somalia/Somaliland - Somaliland would be very unlikely to devolve because it is culturally unified, and has the potential to establish a well-functioning government. Somalia is likely to devolve and create a new region, Puntland, which would be almost identical of Somaliland.
Arabian Gulf Union - I don't think that the states that make up this region would be likely to devolve from each other because they could create a great economy, with being one of the world's top producers of oil/gas. The slight chance that they could devolve could be because of the different states have people that are members of different sects of Islam.

Census Data Mapper Map & Analysis - October 2013
LINK to this map on Google Drive
The only modern economical impact that the cluster of African Americans in the south has made is the north being less racially diverse. However, 50 years ago, there was a big stir in the civil rights movement in the south. Black children were being separated from white children in everything from schools to drinking fountains. This created many heroes like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks who changed the U.S. society forever.
Census Data Mapper Map & Analysis
The map that I made is where African Americans are located in the United States. The south-east part of the U.S. has an extremely high concentration of African Americans. The farther north and west you go, there is less and less African Americans. In the north-west U.S. (Montana, Idaho), there is almost no black people. On the east and west coast, there is a fair amount of African Americans, but most of them live in a cluster of states in the south-east corner.
The reason I think that there is so many African Americans in the south-east is because they haven’t migrated to anywhere else in the country (Of course some people would migrate, but most of them stayed in the south). During slavery in the U.S., almost all of the slaves were in the south, with next to none being in the north. Now that slavery is over i think that the black people are just staying in the south because their culture is very alive in the south and also because their ancestors have lived there for many years.
